In Wisconsin, truck drivers must follow state and federal regulations that dictate everything from how old a driver must be to how many hours they can drive before they must stop and rest.
If you were injured in a truck accident where the driver violated trucking regulations, contact a Milwaukee truck accident lawyer to find out how we can help you get compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses.
Gruber Law Offices has represented victims of truck accidents for over 40 years. Our team of over 130 legal professionals can help determine your rights to compensation if you were injured in a truck accident.
Here are some of the many regulations truck drivers must abide by in Wisconsin.
Truck Driver Regulations in Wisconsin
At our firm, we handle numerous truck accident claims, and we want to educate you about some of the truck driving regulations in Wisconsin.
Contact Gruber Law Offices to schedule a free consultation if you were hurt in a truck accident, especially if you believe the driver broke one or more trucking regulations.
Age
To get a Commercial Driver License (CDL) in Wisconsin, you must be at least 18 years old.
You can only drive trucks within the state until the age of 21, at which time you are allowed to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines.
Licensing
To get a CDL, you must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and obtain a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP).
You must also pass a knowledge test and a driving skills test for the type of vehicle you want to drive.
Endorsements
Certain operations–like driving hazardous materials, school buses, or tank vehicles–require special endorsements on your CDL.
Each endorsement has different requirements.
Background Checks
While any trucking company might run background checks on potential drivers, some tasks, like applying for a hazardous materials endorsement, require a background check.
Hours of Service
Wisconsin drivers must take at least 10 consecutive hours off-duty before driving in interstate commerce, and they can’t drive after being on duty for more than 11 consecutive hours.
Additionally, drivers must stop for at least a 30-minute break after eight consecutive hours of driving.
Duty Status
Drivers must record their duty status for each 24-hour period and keep a copy of those records for seven days.
Since drivers are only required to keep those records for seven days, you should contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as you can after being injured in a truck accident.
Medical Certification
Drivers must pass a federal medical examination within two years of getting their CDL, and drivers must renew their CDL every eight years.
Other Regulations
Truck drivers must also ensure that their vehicle meets local and federal regulations for load size and weight, record keeping, insurance coverage requirements, and more.
