You may or may not have noticed new fences popping up near the roadside. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has been setting up wooden snow fences throughout the past couple of years to help keep drivers safer. The fences help to keep snow off the road, and decrease the winds on the road.
Interstate 43 was once known as a road with drifting snowfall and dangerously high winds. One of the snow fences, larger than ones currently being used, was built here as a “pilot.” Since then, they have shown up throughout Wisconsin.
According to one Wisconsin DOT representative, some of the fences are temporary while others are permanent. He also states that the DOT continues to monitor what is needed in order to make roads safer.
One smart method they use for safety is using natural barriers such as bushes to help block winter winds. When this isn’t possible, and fences need to be built, it is required to first obtain permission from the landowner. Another reason for using natural barriers is simply the price.
