We can all agree Wisconsin is absolutely beautiful during the holiday season, and what better way to get out and enjoy the winter sights than by visiting a holiday light show? The Milwaukee area offers many great holiday displays that you can enjoy from the warmth of your car.
When viewing holiday lights, you must pay attention to keep you and your loved ones safe. Some events allow visitors to enjoy the light displays on foot, but if you view them by vehicle, you must keep your safety in mind.
Sadly, car accidents remain a problem statewide, causing serious injuries. Hundreds of people suffer fatal injuries in car accidents every year, so don’t let lights distract you while driving. With your safety in mind, check out one (or more) of these top holiday light shows in the Milwaukee area:
1. Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival (Downtown)
The Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival is one of the best light shows in the Midwest that your whole family can enjoy.
The city has run the holiday light festival for more than 20 years. This year, organizers have promised that over 500,000 sparkling lights will light up the city. The festival brochure also boasts live shows, photo ops with Santa, and other gatherings to bring together friends and family.
After the opening events, event-goers can walk over to Pere Marquette Park to enjoy the festival’s opening night extravaganza. If you cannot make opening night, be sure to check out the festival at some point during the season. Many events are scheduled during the event’s run.

Christmas in the Ward, which occurs in late November and early December, features various festivities to get you in the holiday spirit. The event is held in the city’s historic Third Ward, a vibrant and trendy neighborhood just south of downtown along the Milwaukee River.
Holiday events include a tree–lighting ceremony, a winter fireworks display, visits with Santa at a gingerbread house, and a live reindeer display with Mrs. Claus and Santa’s elves. Attendees can also enjoy a holiday cookie sale, hot chocolate, and other refreshments.
3. Country Christmas Light Show (Waukesha)
If you are looking for a holiday light festival outside of Milwaukee, the Country Christmas Light Show might be perfect for you.
Country Christmas offers Wisconsin’s largest outdoor drive-through holiday light display. This set-up is only a 25-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee. Upon arrival, you can get tickets to see how Ingleside Hotel, located in Pewaukee, has been transformed into a winter wonderland.
Visitors Can See 30,000+ Holiday Lights
Country Christmas offers a truly unique holiday experience. For example, there are holiday “trails,” including a 200–foot–long tunnel with over 30,000 glistening holiday lights. Admission to the display includes a visit through Country Christmas Trail and Village Park.
At the end of the trail, you will find several gorgeous decorated displays, including a recreation of Bethlehem and a working model train village. Visitors can also see the lights via wagon rides and bike rides on special nights. If you plan to see the displays by bicycle, the trail will be closed to traffic.
