Wisconsin Unlicensed Motorcyclist Accidents

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation informs us that 36% of motorcycle fatalities within the last ten years involved a rider that did not have a valid motorcycle license. In some of those years, the percentage was up to nearly half! The Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program manager agrees that unlicensed motorcycle riders are a huge concern.

In Wisconsin, riding without a license risks three demerit points along with a fine of $200. Last year, over 850 people were successfully prosecuted for just that, although the issue continues to persist. To encourage change, some states have adopted even harsher traffic law penalties for motorcycle drivers, such as impoundment of the motorcycle. However, time has shown that these punishments have not made a difference in the number of citations given for the issue.

The license required in order to drive a motorcycle belongs to Class M, or at minimum, the corresponding learner’s permit and training course. The fee for an instruction permit is currently $32, and the fee for a Class M license is $22, although there may be changes to these prices. Keep in mind that the rules for a moped or scooter are not the same as that of an actual motorcycle. Specific requirements like motorcycle operator skills tests or knowledge tests, for obtaining a motorcycle license, or any other type of valid driver’s license, can easily be found online or from your local DMV.

Driving a motorcycle is considered more difficult than driving a regular four-wheeled car or motor vehicle. In addition, a bike rider is at a much greater risk of being harmed without a vehicle surrounding their body for protection.
