Motorcyclists – Blind Spot Awareness

The blind spot. It is that area on a vehicle where a driver cannot see other vehicles in their side view mirror.  This is a dangerous spot for any vehicle to be in, but it is particularly dangerous for a motorcyclist.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 840,000 blind spot accidents occur each year in the United States.  We all know how this happens.  The vehicle driver changes lanes or merges onto a highway and they fail to take the extra step of looking over their shoulder to see if a vehicle is next to them.

What is even more scary today is that not only do people forget to look, now they are consciously not looking because they are relying on their blind spot indicators in their vehicle to tell them if a vehicle is next to them.  As a motorcyclist, this does not make us safer.
